Abstract

The research on the adsorption of the procion red mx-5b dye using the CaO/Fe3O4 composite has been carried out. CaO/Fe3O4 composite with mass ratio (1:1) were synthesized using coprecipitation method. Material characterization using XRD, BET, VSM and FTIR. The results of XRD characterization of the CaO/Fe3O4 composite showed the presence CaO at the diffraction peak at 2θ = 53.66o and Fe3O4 at the diffraction peak at 2θ =35.47o. The result of BET characterization resulted in a CaO/Fe3O4 composite surface area of 86.029 m2/g. The saturation magnetization value of the CaO/Fe3O4 composite is 62.81 emu/g. The FTIR spectrum of the CaO/Fe3O4 composite before adsorption indicates the presence of Fe-O, Ca-O, O-C-O, and O-H functional groups, after adsorption it was shown the addition of C-Cl and S-O functional groups. CaO/Fe3O4 composite has a pHpzc of being at pH 7. Optimum conditions in the adsorption of procion red mx-5b dye using CaO/Fe3O4 composite at a dye concentration of 250 mg/L, contact time for 50 minutes at a temperature of 60oC obtained adsorption capacity of 47.39 mg/g. The result of the adsorption kinetics matched to the pseudo second order, the adsorption isotherm matched the Langmuir model. The results of the calculation of thermodynamic parameters showed that the adsorption proceeded spontaneously and take place by physisorption and is exothermic.
