Abstract

Porang (Amorphophallus oncophyllus Prain.) belongs to the family Araceae, which is a type of tuber plant that is able to live in various types and soil conditions. Porang is a potential plant to be developed as an export commodity because several countries need this plant as food and industrial material. Porang tuber processing must be done carefully, because porang tubers contain needle-shaped calcium oxalate which causes itching and conicin which causes bitter taste. Basic research such as research on the anatomical structure of vegetative organs is still lacking. Whereas basic research such as morphology and anatomical structure can help problems in the field of taxonomy. This research was carried out from December 2021 to February 2022 at the Microtechnical Laboratory and plant physiology laboratory of the Biology Department, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Sriwijaya University. The purpose of this study was to determine the anatomical structure of the vegetative organs of Porang (Amorphophllus oncophyllus P.). This study used a descriptive method, which is a method that describes the results of qualitative observations of the structure of leaves, petioles, stems, roots and tubers in terms of anatomy, and the preparation of preparations using the paraffin method. and Whole mount (Sass, 1958). Morphological observation results. Morphology of porang growing in moist soil conditions. The leaves are elliptical, pointed ends, wavy edges have a length of 185.42 cm and a width of 93.98 cm while the stem is 91.44 cm high, round (teres), has a white pattern in the shape of a square, there are two types of bulbs namely bulbil bulbs growing on Secondary stems and stem tubers grow in an oval-shaped layer of soil. The results of anatomical research showed that porang leaves have a single trichome, an ergastic substance in the form of crystals in the form of raphide and druse and there is an internal secretory structure in the form of mucilage cells. The leaves and stems have indentations in the epidermis, have a cuticle, the epidermis is square, has an ergastic substance in the form of raphide and druse crystals and internal secretory cells in the form of mucilage. Porang roots have multicellular trichomes, have cortical tissue that contains internal secretory cells in the form of mucilage, polyarch root type and vascular tissue arranged in a circle. There are two types of porang tubers, namely bulbil, which has an ergastic substance in the form of raphide and druse crystals, and internal secretory cells in the form of mucilage. Stem tubers have various ergastic substances, namely raphides, druses, styloids and prisms.
