Abstract

Ultisol is a soil that has a low fertility level. One way to improve the quality of the physical properties of ultisol soils is to provide soil enhancers. Biochar is one of the most widely used soil amendments. The definition of biochar itself is the result of incomplete combustion of various organic materials. Soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merril) is one of the common commodities in Indonesia. One way to increase soybean production is to improve the quality of soil physical properties on ultisols. Giving biochar from different raw materials can produce different results. This study aimed to examine the physical properties of Ultisol soil and the growth of soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merril) which were applied to several different types of biochar and to determine which type of biochar would most improve the physical properties of Ultisol soil and growth of soybean (Glycine max. (L.) Merrill). This research was conducted at the Greenhouse of the Soil Department, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University, Indralaya, Ogan Ilir and was conducted from December 2021 – March 2022. This study used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) method with 5 treatments, namely B0 (Control), B1 (Biochar). Rice Husk) 30 tons ha-1 , B2 (Wood Biochar) 30 tons ha-1 , B3 (Coconut Shell Biochar) 30 tons ha-1 , B4 (Oil Palm Shell Biochar) 30 tons ha-1 . 4 replications were carried out so that there were 20 experimental units which were then analyzed using ANNOVA variance and 5% BNT follow-up test. The results showed that each treatment had no significant effect on the physical properties of the soil. But it has a significant effect on soil pH at 12 weeks after planting and has a very significant effect on soybean plant height (Glycine max (L.) Merril). The treatment of rice husk biochar has good results for soil physical properties and soybean plant growth (Glycine). max (L.) Merrill)
