Abstract

ABSTRACT EFFECT OF GAS FLOW RATE AND HUMIDIFIER TEMPERATURE ON THE PERFORMANCE OF MEMBRANE ELECTRODE ASSEMBLY (MEA) WITH Ti-Co/C CATALYST ON SINGLE STACK PEMFC Muhammad Prima Utama, supervised by Dr. Dedi Rohendi M.T and Dr. Eliza, M. Si Chemistry, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Sriwijaya University xv + 43 Pages, 10 Pictures, 7 Attachments The research has been carried out on the effect of gas flow rate and humidifier temperature on the performance of the Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA) using Pt/C electrodes at the anode and Ti-Co/C electrodes at the cathode in PEMFC. MEA consists of electrodes and an electrolyte membrane in the form of a Nafion 212 membrane. The electodes are made by spraying a catalyst layer on the surface of the Gas Diffusion Layer (GDL), then the two electrodes are attached to the side of the Nafion 212 membrane. The MEA was characterized using the Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) method to determine the number of electrochemically active surfaces on the MEA as seen from the value of the Electrochemical Surface Area (ECSA) and using the Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) method to determine the value of the electrical conductivity on the MEA. Based on the characterization results, the ECSA value was 8.43 cm2/g and the electrical conductivity value was 3.76 x 10-8 S/cm. The effect of gas flow rate has an optimum performance on MEA at a flow rate of 100 mL/minute and shows an optimum power density value of 0,364 mW/cm2 and an optimum current density of 2.4 mA/cm2. The effect of humidifier temperature on MEA performance was obtained at the optimum temperature at room temperature and showed the optimum power density value of 0.375 mW/cm2 and the optimum current density of 2.8 mA/cm2.
