Abstract

One of the most common skin diseases in the world is acne, which occurs in about 91% of men and 79% of women in their teens. One way in acne therapy is to use an antibacterial to suppress the growth of normal bacterial flora that causes excessive acne. The use of antibiotics for acne is not recommended because it is feared that resistance will occur if they are used continuously. Citronella essential oil has antibacterial activity against Propionibacterium acnes bacteria, so that it has potential as an alternative therapy in the treatment of acne. The main chemical compounds of citronella essential oil are citronellol, geraniol and citronellol. Essential oils have volatile properties and can be decomposed by heat, light, oxygen and humidity. This can cause the bioavailability of essential oils to decrease. To overcome this problem, essential oils need to be formulated into dosage forms that are more stable and easy to apply, such as nanoemulsion preparations. The aim of this study was to obtain the optimum formula for nanoemulsion preparations of Citronella (Cymbopogon nardus L.) essential oil. Citronella essential oil was obtained from an integrity service program in Payakabung village, Ogan Ilir, South Sumatra. Citronella essential oil was formulated into a nanoemulsion dosage form using variations, Tween 80 and Propylene glycol. Both of these materials were optimized using the Design Expert 12 program with a 2-level factorial design approach that obtained 4 run formulas. The preparations were evaluated for physical properties, namely organoleptic, homogeneity, pH, specific gravity, viscosity, percent transmittance, stability and hedonic. The test results were analyzed by DX12 to get the optimum formula. The obtained concentration of Tween 80 is 45% and Propylene glycol 25%, has a transmittance percentage of 99%, a specific gravity of 1.06357 g/mL, a viscosity of 13.3 cP.
