Abstract

Background: Melasma is a chronic disorder, an acquired light- or dark-brown hyperpigmentation and it is most commonly seen in areas that receive sun exposure. Exacerbating factors include ultraviolet light, hormones, race, drugs, cosmetic ingredients, and genetic influences. Melasma epidemiology is unknown in Dermatocosmetology Polyclinic Department of Dermatovenereology Dr. Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital Palembang on 2010-2011. Objective: To determine incidence, prevalence, and distribution of melasma in Dermatocosmetology Polyclinic Department of Dermatovenereology Dr. Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital Palembang on 2010-2011. Methods: Retrospective observational study was carried out on October to December 2012 in Installation Medical Record and Dermatocosmetology Polyclinic. The research sample was drawn from secondary data melasma patients on 2010-2011. Results: The population of this study is 1.307 patients in Dermatocosmetology Polyclinic and 156 of them were selected through to be samples. The incidence of melasma was 5,66% and prevalence was 11,94%. Melasma occurs ffequently in decade of 1V-V (27,56-50%). Among 153 (98,08%) female patients, 18 (11,76%) patients reported use hormona! contraceptive and 22 (14,10%) patients reported use cosmetic. Conclusion: The incidence, prevalence, and distribution of melasma patients who use hormonal contraceptives and cosmetics in Dennatocosmetology Polyclinic Department of Dermatovenereology Dr. Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital Palembang were increased on 2010-2011. The majority of melasma patients were female on decade of 1V-V.
