Abstract

Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) is a disease caused by the dengue virus through a vector in the form of the Aedes aegypti mosquito. Synthetic larvicides are a mainstay for thecommunity in controlling the Ae. aegypti mosquito vector. The use of synthetic larvicides can cause resistance to larvae, so it is necessary to look for other alternatives to overcome these problems, namely by using vegetable larvicides. The purpose of this study was to compare the ability of malay apple extract and fraction as a vegetable larvicide to the mortality of third instar larvae of Ae. aegypti mosquitoes, and to determine the LC50 value of malay apple leaf extract and fraction. This research was carried out from January to April 2022 at the Genetics and Biotechnology Laboratory, Departement of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Sriwijaya University and the Entomology Laboratory of the Baturaja Research and Development Center. The research design used was a completely randomized design with 7 treatments and 5 replications. The procedure in this study was to determine the comparison of the ability of malay apple leaf extract and fraction as a vegetable larvicide by testing the extract and fraction against third instar larvae of Ae. aegypti mosquitoes and then observing and calculating the mortality percentage, knowing the LC50 value of the extract and fraction malay apple leaf by analyzing mortality data, obtained using probit analysis. The results showed that the extract and n-hexane fraction of malay apple leaves had the ability to kill the third instar larvae of Ae. aegypti. The percentage of test larvae mortality in malay apple leaf extract was 25%, 37%, 44%, 53%, and 76%. While the percentage mortality of test larvae in the n-hexane fraction of malay apple leaves was 20%, 38%, 49%, 62%, and 70%. The LC50 value which was able to kill 50% of larvae in malay apple leaf extract was 1751,76 ppm and in the n-hexane fraction of malay apple leaves 1737,98 ppm. The bioactive compounds contained in the n-hexane fraction of malay apple leaves are phenols and terpenoids. Keywords: Vegetable Larvicides, Syzygium malaccense (L.) Merr & LM Perry, Aedes aegypti L
