Abstract

Background: In geriatric population, there are gastrointestinal disorders such as constipation. Constipation cari be caused by hypothyroidism. There were many study about constipation but there is no study about the relationship hyphothyroid and constipation in elderly population, The aim of this study was to know the relationship between hypothyroidsm and constipation in elderly patient at RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. Method: This study was cross sectional design and performed by collecting the data in the laboratorium and medical record at RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin, then performed home visits from October 2012-January 2013. Population of this study were the patient who checked their tyroid hormone level in Laboratorium RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. The samples were 29 of respondents. Data was obtained through direct interview using a questionnaire. Result: From the 29 respondents, 4 people were hypothyroidism, 3 other were females, 1 male. As many as 8 respondents were constipation, with 1 male and 7 females. From 4 hypothyroidism, 3 respondents were constipation. Incidence of constipation most widely find on respondents aged 60-64 years old as many as 4 people. Only one obese patient was contipation, 3 patients did not consume fiber, 5 patients have less liquid, 8 patients did not consume coffee, 5 patients did not consume tea, 4 patients have less activity, and 4 patients have a habitual to delay defecation. Conclusion: From this study, it could be concluded that there is no relationship of TSH level p=0,057 (p>0,05) and the incidence of constipation in elderly at RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang.
