Abstract

Root distribution of oil palm plants on peat soil is different from the distribution of rooting of oil palm plants on mineral soils, the distribution of rooting of oil palm plants on peatlands is narrower or shorter than the base of the stem compared to mineral soil. This study aims to look at the distribution of rooting of oil palm plants (Elaeis guineensis Jacq) on peatlands. This research was carried out on peatlands in the smallholder plantations of Pulau Kabal Village, Sub-District North Indralaya, Ogan Ilir Districts, South Sumatra and carried out from September 2018 - November 2018.The method used is the survey method, with a land area of 2 ha each and taken 5% of the total population. The selection of plants was deliberately selected for each of the 15 plants with a total of 6 blocks of 3 plant ages. Root observation was carried out by auger method (Bohm, 1979). With a total of 720 samples at 3 plant ages. The results of this study indicate that the maturity level of oil palm peat at the age of 3 years has the highest average compared to the age of plants of 5 and 7 years. In addition, the results of the study showed that the root weight of oil palm plants on peat land was highest at a depth of 0 - 30 cm at a distance of 100 cm from the base of the stem, both at the age of plants 3, 5 and 7 years. The distribution of rooting palm oil plants develops better in the horizontal direction than in the vertical direction, both for oil palm plants aged 3, 5 and 7 years. But the roots of oil palm plants are still found at a depth of 90 cm in some sampling points both at the age of 3, 5 and 7 years Keywords: Oil Palm, Peatlands, Root System.
