Abstract

Upper Respiratory Tract Infection is one of the main causes of death for children under five, which is the most vulnerable age group because the protection system in the respiratory tract has not been fully formed. The physical condition of the house can be a risk factor for the incidence of ARI including (wide ventilation, PM10, natural lighting, humidity, residential density, exposure to cigarette smoke, use of insect repellent, temperature) and characteristics of children under five (gender, exclusive breastfeeding). This study aims to determine the relationship between the physical condition of the house and the incidence of ARI in children under five in the Tanjung Agung Public Health Center, Baturaja Barat District, OKU Regency. This study used a cross-sectional study design with a sampling technique using purposive sampling of as many as 75 respondents. Data were analyzed by univariate, bivariate (Chi-Square test), and multivariate (multiple logistic regression analysis predictive models). The results of the bivariate analysis showed that there was a relationship between ventilation area (pvalue=0,030), PM10 (p-value=0,001), lighting (p-value=0,001), humidity (pvalue=0,008), occupancy density (p-value=0,010), temperature (p-value=0,001), exclusive breastfeeding (0.048), there was no relationship between exposure to cigarette smoke (p-value=0,264), use of mosquito coils (p-value=0,205), gender (p-value=0.627) with the incidence of ARI in children under five, and multivariate analysis showed that lighting was the most dominant variable with p-value=0,002 and PR=12,105, which means that toddlers living in the house with lighting that does not meet the requirements 12 times more at risk for ARI. The conclusion that toddlers living in homes that do not meet health requirements increase the risk of ARI occurrence. The researcher's advice for the community is to pay attention to the physical condition of the house by adding glass tiles, routinely cleaning the house and opening ventilation, and keeping toddlers away from exposure to cigarette smoke.
