Abstract

Introduction: One of the factors that cause illnesses and death is Low Birth Weight (LBW). Infants with LBW are highly susceptible to infectious diseases compared to infants with Normal Birth Weight (NBW). The objective of this research is, to compare the occurrence of diarrhea between LBW and NBW infants aged 2-12 months at Boom Baru Primary Health Centre, Palembang Period October - December 2011. Method: Research was analytic research with cross sectional design. To collect the data that related to the variables analyzed, which were LBW, NBW, and the occurrence of diarrhea were obtained from primary data which was taken through interview and questionnaire. The data for occurrence of diarrhea were taken in the last 3 months. The statistical analysis used was Independent Samples T Test at a=0,05. Result: The numbers of samples were 53 infants. The percentage for LBW infants was 24.5%, whereas for NBW was 75.5%. The occurrence of diarrhea ffequent in NBW, which was 77 times (average 1.93�} 2.596), compared to LBW infants with an occurrence of 25 times (average 1.92�} 1.935). The research concluded no significant comparison between LBW and NBW towards the occurrence of diarrhea with p value 0.231. Conclusion: There was no significant comparison between LBW and NBW infants towards the occurrence of diarrhea.
