Abstract

This study aims to describe how the efforts made by the United States to balance China’s power in the waters of the South China Sea (SCS) in 2010-2014. This study uses a qualitative-explanative type of research, namely research that explains the occurrence of a phenomenon in International Relations. There are several theories/concepts used by the author, namely: Neorealism, National Interests, and Balance on Power. However, in this thesis the author focuses more on using the concept of Balance of Power. The result of this study is that the United States (US) uses the Pivot to Asia strategy to reduce China’s influence in Asia. China will find it difficult to join the Trans-Pacific Partnershit (TPP) because there are points of agreement that China clearly cannot fulfill. The United States also cooperates with the Philippines and Vietnam. The Philippines offers military cooperation with the US to fight China’s dominance in the SCS. Meanwhile, Vietnam signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in 2011 not only focusing on maritime discussions, but also to balance the Chinese navy.
