Abstract

Background: Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths. Its incidence has always increased. A large number of studies about lung cancer have been carried out. Commonly, they studied the symptoms description and staging, patient's quality of life, and relationship between lung cancer and smoke. Yet, study about knowledge level about lung cancer is still limited. This study aims to determine the knowledge level of patient's family about lung cancer in Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang. Method: A cross sectional designed survey was conducted in Non Surgery Installation at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang on October and November 2012. The population was the family oflung cancer patients who were hospitalized. Samples were 31 persons, chosen by purposive sampling technique. The data were obtained by conducting direct interview using questionnaire. Result: Of all 31 respondents, it was seen that 87.1% have good knowledge level about lung cancer, and 12.9% have enough knowledge level. As many as 16.1% respondents have good knowledge level about lung cancer definition, 41.9% have good knowledge level about lung cancer risk factors, 83.9% have good knowledge level about sign and symptom of lung cancer, 64.5%) have good knowledge level about lung cancer examination, 80.6% have good knowledge level about lung cancer treatment, 61.3% have good knowledge level about prevention of lung cancer, and 29%) have good knowledge level about lung cancer prognosis. Conclusion: From the result of this study, it can be concluded that the knowledge level of patient 's family about lung cancer in Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang is in good category.
