Abstract

Leprosy is a chronic infection diseases caused by Mycobacterium leprae mainly affects the peripheral nerves and the skin. Leprosy patients were often rejected in the community since there were wrong perceptions regarding leprosy. Misconceptions regarding leprosy which developed in the community influenced by knowledges, beliefs and attitudes of society so that lead a community behaviour to the leprosy patient. Knowledges, beliefs, attitudes and behaviours of the society in South Sumatera Province have not been studied yet. The study purpose is to identify knowledge, beliefs, attitudes and behaviours of the society on leprosy. A cross sectional study was conducted in Parit, Pelaju and Suka Pindah Village in Rambutan Sub District about leprosy. The study population was a population of Parit, Pelaju and Suka Pindah Village which was more than 17 years old. The method of sampling was proportional stratified random sampling to get 96 respondents as the minimal sample. A structure interview was used as the data collection instrument. More than a half (51,04%) of the respondents had well knowledge of leprosy. Although 68,8% of respondents attributed the right cause of leprosy to germs, many (60,4%) of these respondents also believed that leprosy is a hereditary disease and 55,2% of the respondents stated that it can be transmitted from mother to infant. The common misconceptions regarding leprosy were leprosy can spread easily was 51%, it was incurable was 44,8% and leprosy related deformities were inevitable was 76%. More than ninety three percent of the respondents showed positive attitude and 88,54% of the respondents had positive behaviour. In conclusion, the respondents have a lack of knowledge and there are still misconceptions regarding leprosy but the respondents have a good attitude and a good behaviour about leprosy.
