Abstract

Background: Malnutrition is one of the common cause of morbidity in children with congenital heart disease. The prevalence of malnutrition in children with congenital heart disease before surgery were up to 45% in developing countries, other than that there are differences in nutritional status between children with cyanotic congenital heart disease and non-cyanotic. This study aims to determine the child's nutritional status and the prevalence of congenital heart disease as well as differences in nutritional status between children with cyanotic congenital heart disease and non-cyanotic. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out in all children with congenital heart disease in Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Hospital from October-December 2012. Anthropometric measurements (weight, body length, arm circumference, and head circumference) was performed on all patients. Malnutrition and short stature were determined according to Kemenkes RI 2010, microcephaly were determined according to WHO 2000, weight for length, weight for age, length for age, amis circumference for age, and head circumference for age accordingly. Results: The total sample is 18 samples, 10 samples (55,6%) with non-cyanotic and 8 samples (44,4%) with cyanotic. 61,1% of the total samples are malnourished, 50% of the total samples are severe undemutrition, 55,6% of the total samples are short stature, 5,6% of the total samples are microcephaly. Patients with non-cyanotic lesions are more affected in weight compare than length (100% to 60%), whereas patients with cyanotic lesions are almost equally affected in weight and length (62,5% to 50%). Conclusion: More than half of the total patients with congenital heart disease are malnourished, severe undemutrition is more dominant. In non-cyanotic lesions, patients are more affected in weight compare than length. In cyanotic lesions, patients are almost equally affected in weight and length.
