Abstract

This research aims to determine the effect of extraction techniques on seed viability and vigor, to determine the most effective and efficient chilli pepper seed extraction technique in terms of physical and physiological appearance, and to determine the most effective and efficient extraction technique in producing high quality chili pepper seeds. This research was conducted at the Laboratory of Seed Technology, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University, Indralaya, Ogan Ilir from July to August 2022. This study was conducted using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 5 treatments and 5 replications, each replication contained 20 seeds. The treatments tested in this research were extraction techniques using plain water, hot water 80°C, HCl 2%, H2SO4 2%, and KNO3 2%. The parameters observed were rate of seed germination, maximum growth potential, seed germination, vigor index, plumule length, root length, plumule fresh weight, root fresh weight, plumule dry weight, and root dry weight. The data obtained were analyzed using the variance test and 5% LSD test. The results of the research showed that the treatment of chili pepper seed extraction technique using 2% HCl solution gave seeds that were cleaner, brighter, and of good treatment than other treatments and could increase rate of seed germination, maximum growth potential, seed germination, but had no significant effect on plant growth. Keywords: Extraction Technique, Viability, and Seed Vigor.
