Abstract
Introduction: Urinary incontinence is defined as loss of urine that occurs unconsciously. This problem is very rarely complained in public, even though urinary incontinence is an important health issue. Incidence of urinary incontinence increases with age. The aim of the study was to determine the types and characteristics of persistent urinary incontinence types amongst elderly in Dharma Bhakti Nursing Home and Tresna Werdha Teratai Nursing Home Palembang. Methods: This study is a descriptive study with cross-sectional design on 72 patients with persistent urinary incontinence in Dharma Bhakti Nursing Home and Tresna Werdha Teratai Nursing Home Palembang conducted during October-November 2013. The data was obtained through interviews using the ICIQ-SF questionnaire. Results: Out of the 72 respondents, 24 respondents (33.3 %) had mixed urinary incontinence, 11 respondents (15.3 %) experienced overflow urinary incontinence, 23 respondents (31.9 %) experienced stress urinary incontinence, and 14 respondents (19.4 %) experienced urgency urinary incontinence. Conclusions: The most commonly found types of persistent urinary incontinence in Dharma Bhakti Nursing Home and Tresna Werdha Teratai Nursing Home Palembang is mixed urinary incontinence.
