Abstract

Background: Latest data about pleural effusion in Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital Palembang revealed that pleural effusion caused by tuberculosis is higher than malignancy and others. The aim of this study is to determine etiology of pleural effusion in patients at Pulmonary Subdivision of Internal Medicine Action Room of Mohammad Hoesin Hospital for June 2013-November 2013 Period. Methods: Descriptive study by recorded data and interviewed patients that got thoracosynthesis in Pulmonary Subdivision of Internal Medicine Action Room of Mohammad Hoesin Hospital for June 2013-November 2013 Period with total sampling method which was all patients on this period were included in this study. Results: From 50 pleural effusion’s cases, 25 (50%) cases was caused by malignancy, 24 (48%) cases with tuberculosis, and only 1 (2%) case was caused by pleuropneumonia. 32 cases (64.0%) happened in male and 18 cases (36.0%) were female. Most of patients with pleural effusion was 55-64 age group. Radiology imaging showed that location of pleural effusion in right region (62%) was higher than left region. Analysis result of pleural fluid showed the most common were yellow fluid and positive rivalta test. Other laboratory’s result were pH concentration 8.0 (7.0-9.0), protein 40.95�} 13.47 (g/L), glucose 4.87�}2.49 (mmol/L), LDH 6.43 (1.44-51.5) (pkat/L), 1100 (100-7500) amount of cells, PMN 12.96�}13.74 (%), and MN 87.02�}13.75 (%). Conclusions: Malignancy was the most common etiology of pleural effusion. Most of patients had dyspneu. Male was higher than female. Mostly on 55-64 age group. Location of pleural effusion in unilateral more ffequent than bilateral which was the right side was the most frequent. Analysis results of pleural fluid revealed that the fluid was exudate.
