Abstract

Introduction: Dyspepsia is a pain or discomfort that comes from the upper abdominal area. The prevalence of dyspepsia in the world is around 7% to 60%. Approximately 25% of the total population suffers from dyspepsia 6 times a year, but only 10-20% goes to the doctor. Nowadays, dyspepsia has become the center of attention in clinical research compared to other gastrointestinal disorders. The aim of this study is to determine the clinical characteristics of patients who suffers dyspepsia. Method: This study is an observational descriptive study of 201 dyspepsia patients at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital, Palembang. The data were taken from the dyspepsia patients in the Inpatient Medical Records Installation and Action and Diagnostic Room of Gastroentero-Hepatology Department of Internal Medicine Hospital Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang period January lst 2012-December 31st 2012. This study used the total sampling technique. Results: There were 113 patients (56,2%) in age group <50 years old and 105 patient (52,2%) were female. Abdominal pain was found in 113 patients (56,2%). There were 161 patients (80,1%) who had organic dyspepsia in gastrointestinal tract etiology. Chronic gastritis was found in 52 patients (25,9%). Conclusion: The most common age group was <50 years old and female frequent than male. The most frequent clinical symptom was abdominal pain. The most common etiology of dyspepsia was gastrointestinal tract abnormality. The most common disease that seen in endoscopy and ultrasonography examination was chronic gastritis.
