Abstract

Introduction: Delayed bone age in thalassemia patient is caused byferitin serum, hemoglobin prelransfusion, second decade of life, nutrilional, growth velocity, and adequate iron chelaiing agent. The aim of this study was to find out bone age examination in thalassemia patients with short stature in pediatric department of Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang. Method: This research was observational study with cross sectional method on October-November 2013. The population of this study were pediatric thalassemia patients and the samples were patients with short stature in pediatric department of Mohammad Hoesin Hospital Palembang. Statistical analysis used Chi square test. Results: Most of patients had delayed bone age (57,6%). Risk factors of delayed bone age were feritin serum, hb pretransfusion, second decade of life, nutritional, growth velocity, and adequate iron chelating agent (OR>l) but only second decade of life and growth velocity had very association with delayed bone age very significantly (p<0,01) Conclusion: Delayed bone age associated with second decade of life and growth velocity but not associated with feritin serum, hb pretransfusion, nutritional, and adequate iron chelating agent.
