Abstract

Introduction: Leukemia is ci hemafological malignancy caused by immunology, genetic, virus, and Chemical exposure. Leukemia is divided info acute mye lob/as t ic leukemia (AML), acu f e lymphoblaslic leukemia (ALL), chronic myelocytic leukemia (CML), and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). The initial diagnosfic examinations of leukemia are complete blood count and peripheral blood smear examination. The objective of this sfudy is (o know the pattern of peripheral blood smear in leukemia patients at clinical laboratory of RSMH Palembang. Method: This sfudy was a descripfive cross-sectional sfudy on 98 leukemia pafients who were dic/gnosed by peripheral blood smear examination at clinical laboratory of RSMH on January 1, 2012-December 31, 2012. Results: Mosi of leukemia pafients were mcdes (1,3:1). Mosi of AML pafients were 31-40 years old (27,3%), mosi of ALL pafients were 1 month-10 years old (46,2%), most of CML pafients were 21-30 years old (23,3%), and mosf of CLL pafients were 51-60 years old (100%)). Most of peripheral blood smear pattern were found normochromic normocytic erythrocytes; leukocytosis and blast in AML and ALL pafients; leukocytosis and blast in a/l stciges of granulocytic mat urat ion series i n CML pafients; leukocytosis, lymphocytes (+), and smudge cells in CLL pafients; thrombocytopenia and normal-shaped platelets in AML, ALL, and CLL; norma! count and normal-shaped platelets in CML and CLL. Most of leukemia patients suffered from anemia, leukocytosis, and thrombocytopenia. Conclusion: Peripheral blood smear examination is an important laboratory examination to help leukemia diagnosis and assess therapeutic response, so the clinical laboratory department is expected to record peripheral blood examination results well.
