Abstract
Background: Epilepsy with tonic-clonic seizure is the most common type of epilepsy that often occurs in children. Impciired growth and development are the most important problems in epilepsy with tonic-clonic seizures. Objective: To identify characteristics of epilepsy patients with tonic-clonic seizures in children by sociodemographic and clinical findings at Polyclinic of Pediatric Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital Palembang from 2010-2012. Metode: This study is an observational descriptive study with cross sectional approach. Samples were taken from the medical records of children with epilepsy at Polyclinic of Pediatric Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital Palembang in the period 1 January 2010-31 December 2010. Result: From the 78 samples, 38 children (48,7% ) had age group of 6-15 years, 46 children (59%) are boys and 43 children (55,1%) had a considerable socioeconomic group are most common found in the distribution of sociodemographic. From the 69 samples, 60 children (87%) had seizures duration <15 minutes; From the 71 samples, 50 children (70,4%) had >1 the incident of seizure per year; From 67 samples, 37 children (55,2%) had idiopathic etiology; From the 63 samples, 59 children (93,7%) had no history of epilepsy in the family; From the 69 samples, 42 children (60,9%) had a good nutritional status; From the 78 samples, 72 children (91,5%) obtain a monotherapy treatment, especially in 56 children (71,8%) using valproic acid as the main treatment, and 51 children (65,4%) received antiepileptic drug therapy for <2 years is most prevalent on the distribution of clinical findings. Conclusions: Based on sociodemographic characteristic, it was found that the most common type of epilepsy often occurs in children between 6-15 years age group, boys, and considerable socioeconomic. Based on clinical characteristic, it was found that the most seizure duration <15 minutes, re-occurance case >1 time per year, idiopathic etiology, no history of epilepsy in the family, good nutritional status, valproic acid monotherapy, and duration of therapy less than 2 years.
