Abstract

Background: Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by behavioral phenotype that includes qualitative impairment in the areas of communication skills, social interaction and reciprocity, as well as imagination and play are diagnosed before the age of 36 months. In children with autism, peptides from gluten and casein products processed into the bloodstream through the intestinal wali and causes antigenic response and disrupt the Central nervous system directly. Therefore, Gluten Free Casein Free diet is the most commonly used method to improve the fiinction and behavior in children with autism. The aim of this study is to determine the knowledge, attitudes and behaviour in mothers of children with autism about Gluten Free Casein Free diet therapy at Bina Autis Mandiri Palembang. Methods: An observational analysis method with cross-sectional design was used in this study. The study population was all mothers of children with autism at Bina Autis Mandiri Palembang. The study samples were 38 mothers of children with autism at Bina Autis Mandiri Palembang. Results: Twenty four (63.2%) of respondents had a good knowledge, 28 (73.7%) of respondents had a good attitude, and 29 (76.3%) of respondents were applying the Gluten Free Casein Free diet. Bivariate analysis with Fisher’s Exact Test showed that there no association between mothers’ knowledge and attitude (p=l,000, RP= 1,050), between mothers’ knowledge and behaviour (p=0,052, RP=1,531), and between mothers’ attitude and behaviour (p=l,000, RP=0,938). Conclusion: There were no association found between mothers’ knowledge and attitude, between mothers’ knowledge and behaviour, and between mothers’ attitude and behaviour about Gluten Free Casein Free diet therapy.
