Abstract

Background: Breast cancer is one of malignant diseases that develops from abnormal growth of cells in the breast causing cell dysfunction which leads to damage of breast tissue. Cases of breast cancer increase every year so registration and renewal of the data on its prevalence need to be updated. Objective: This study was conducted to identity the prevalence, demographical and pathological characteristics of breast cancer which were histopathologically examined in the Department of Anatomical Pathology at RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang in January 2008-December 2012. Method: Observational descriptive study was carried out in this research by collecting secondary data from patients’ medical records. Population and samples were all of the patients who had been histopathologically examined in the Department of Anatomical Pathology at RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. Results: The prevalence of breast cancer patients examined histopathologically in January 2008-December 2012 was 3,04%. The patient’s age ranged from 15 to 98 years old. The ratio between female and male was 94,6:1. Approximately 51,7% patients lived in the urban areas and 41,1% lived in the rural regions, 7,6% without any information. Invasive breast cancers' were found in 98,3% patients. Around 50,8% breast cancer patients were diagnosed with histoiogical grade in high level (G3). Conclusions: Breast cancer was the most common in the above 55 years old age group. The majority of breast cancer patient was female. People who lived in the urban areas tend to have higher risk in breast cancer compared to those who lived in the rural regions. Invasive carcinoma mammae of no special type (NST) the most common histopathological type found in breast cancer. A large amount of patients came with high level of histoiogical grade.
