Abstract

Plankton are organisms that play a role in the food chain in waters. Increasing activities in the waters of Sungai Lumpur Estuary can have an impact on the presence of plankton. This study aimed to identify the type of plankton and analyze the composition, abundance, distribution and grouping of plankton and relationship between physico-chemical parameters and abundance of plankton. The study was conducted in June 2022 at 10 observation stations. Samples taken include plankton samples (phytoplankton and zooplankton), water samples and measurement of water physico-chemical parameters. Data analysis includes composition, abundance, distribution, community structure, cluster analysis and PCA analysis. Based on the results found 63 genera of phytoplankton with abundances ranging from 666,432-3,182,354 cells/m3 and 26 genera of zooplankton with abundances ranging from 39,514-314,343 ind/m3. The distribution of phytoplankton and zooplankton shows a high abundance value in waters estuary. Plankton grouping obtained 4 clusters based on the abundance value of phytoplankton and zooplankton at each station while based on the abundance of phytoplankton species obtained 4 clusters and zooplankton obtained 3 clusters. The relationship between water physico-chemical parameters and abundance of plankton is most characterized by water temperature. The results showed that the condition of the Sungai Lumpur Estuary were found in good condition for phytoplankton and zooplankton growth.
