Abstract
Introduction: Severe preeclampsia is a leading cause of maternal and infant mortality in comparison to mild preeclampsia, gestational hypertension, antepartum hemorrhage and severe anemia. One of the efforts to reduce maternal and infant mortality rate is by doing regular antenatal care. This study was conducted to determine the correlation between frequency of antenatal care and the incidence of severe preeclampsia. Method: This research is an analytic observational with cross-sectional design. The data is collected through questionnaire and medical records of mothers who gave birth at Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology RSUP dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. Results: From 128 patients, 91 had sufficient antenatal care visits and 37 others had insufficient number of antenatal care visits. Most of patients with insufficient antenatal care visits suffer from severe preeclampsia (22 people, 59.5%). Most mothers with sufficient number of visits don’t suffer from severe preeclampsia (55 people, 60.4%) whereas the rest are dealing with severe preeclampsia (36 people, 39,6%). Statistical analysis showed a significant correlation between the frequency of antenatal care and the incidence of severe preeclampsia (Chi-square p value= 0.040). Conclusion: There is a significant correlation between the frequency of antenatal care and the incidence of severe preeclampsia. Mothers with insufficient antenatal care (<4) visits have bigger risk than mothers with sufficient (>4) and regular antenatal care visits.
