Abstract

Background: The occurrence of caries due to excessive consumption of sweet foods such as candy can be reduced by increasing the salivary flow rate and pH. Mechanical stimulus by chewing jelly candy containing herbal ingredients such as aloe vera and stevia could be an alternative to prevent that negative effect. This study aimed to determine the effect of chewing aloe vera jelly candy with stevia sweetener on salivary flow rate and pH. Methods: This experimental study with a one group pretest and posttest approach involved 28 female subjects. Subjects were instruct to chew both jelly candy with and without aloe vera for 30 times each. Saliva was collected before and after chewing the jelly candy by spitting method every one minute for five minutes. Salivary flow rate was measured by looking at the volume of saliva in ml/minute and pH was measured with a pH meter. Data were analyzed using paired T test and independent T test. Results: This study showed that there was a significant increase in the salivary flow rate and pH after chewing jelly candy with and without aloe vera compared to before chewing jelly candy (p<0.05). Aloe vera jelly candy showed a higher salivary flow rate but was not significantly different from jelly candy without aloe vera (p>0.05), otherwise the pH value was significantly higher (p<0.05). Conclusion: chewing aloe vera jelly candy with stevia sweetener can increase salivary flow rate and pH. Keywords: aloe vera, chewing, salivary flow rate, salivary pH, stevia
