Abstract

This study discusses about "The Roles of Indigenous Figures in Preserving the Local Wisdom of the Tunggu Tubang Custom in Pulau Panggung Village (Study in Semende Darat Laut District, Muara Enim Regency. South Sumatra Province)". In preserving and encouraging the community to preserve the local wisdom of the Tunggu Tubang custom in Pulau Panggung village, an action certainly is needed from indigenous figures as the leaders in the indigenous community order. This research aims to describe the roles of indigenous figures in preserving the local wisdom of the Tunggu Tubang custom in Pulau Panggung village. It used a qualitative research method with a descriptive approach. Data collection technique was conducted through observation, interviews, and documentation. This study used the role theory from Soerjono Soekanto. The results of this study indicated that there are 3 categories of roles: active roles, participative roles and passive roles. The roles of indigenous figures in preserving the local wisdom of Tunggu Tubang custom is stated successful, as seen from the measures taken by the figures by socializing the Tunggu Tubang custom to provide an understanding to the community about the Tunggu Tubang custom, as a mediator for any problems occurred in communities; holding traditional festivals to introduce the Tunggu Tubang custom, and monitoring the behavior of the Tunggu Tubang children to behave in accordance with customary provisions.
