Abstract

Schizophrenia is a psychotic disorder that is chronic and that one can control with lifelong antipsychotic medication. The COVID-19 pandemic period has made people afraid to go to the hospital and health services. This is because they are scared of contracting the deadly virus, thus making families reluctant to take their families to check up on health services. Eventually, patients experience non-adherence to treatment. Aim This study aims to determine the influence of demographics and family social support on medication adherence in schizophrenia patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. Method This research method is descriptive analytic using a cross-sectional design. The sample in this study was the family of a schizophrenic patient who accompanied the patient in treatment. A total of 211 samples were selected by purposive sampling based on specific criteria with data analysis using Chi-Square. Findings The results showed that the majority of respondents who did not support schizophrenia patients at the Sukarami District Health Center were (56.3%). Variables that have a significant relationship to medication adherence in schizophrenia patients during the COVID19 pandemic include family social support (P-value=0.048; OR=1.813; 95% CI=1.004-3.271), age (P=0.076 OR=1.753 CI). 95%=0.943-3.261). The variables sex, education, employment status, marital status, economic status, drug-taking behavior, and access to services did not have a significant relationship to medication adherence of schizophrenia patients. Conclusion it can be concluded that non-adherence to medication for schizophrenia patients during the COVID-19 pandemic can be caused by family social support that is less supportive in treatment. And then the respondent's age also affects adherence to the treatment of schizophrenia patients.
