Abstract

Background: Diabetes Mellitus is a group of metabolic disease with characteristic hyperglycemia that occurs because of abnormalities of insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. According to WHO, in 2000 the number of people with diabetes over the age of20years amounted to 150 million people and over a period of 25 years later, in 2025, that number will come to 300 million people. While in Indonesia, it is estimated that by 2030 the prevalence of diabetes mellitus will reach 21.3 million people. This study is aimed to investigate the rationality of oral antidiabetic usage in DM type 2 patients in Myria Hospital Palembang. Methods: Drug utilization study to evaluate the rationality of oral antidiabetic uses which was conducted from November until December 2011 in Myria Hospital Palembang. The population of this study is medical records of patients who were diagnosed with DM type 2 and treated with oral antidiabetic from January 2010 until May 2011. There were 56 medical records as samples that appropiate with inclusions criteria. The datas were processed by manual and SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) 18. Results: From 56 medical records found the oral antidiabetic drugs more prescribed for female (34 medical records/60.7%) than male (22 medical records/39.3%), more in adults by 43 medical records (76.8%) than the advanced age by 13 medical records (23.2%). Mostly prescribed in the name of trade (patent) by 51 medical records (91.1%) compared to generic in only 5 medical records (8.9%), the groups with commonly prescribed was Sulfonylurea in 45 medical records (52.32%). All doses of oral antidiabetic drugs in 56 medical records (100%) were rational. Frequency of oral antidiabetic drugs that was not rational medical records contained into 2 medical records (3.57%) from a total of 56 medical records. All duration of administration of oral antidiabetic drugs in 56 medical records (100%) were rational. There was antagonistic interaction which was irrational found in 6 medical records (10.71%). Conclusion: irrationality of oral antidiabetic uses in Myria Hospital Palembang was 3,57% for the frequency of administration and 10,71% for antagonistic interaction.
