Abstract

Indonesia is a country with abundant natural resources. One form of Indonesia's natural wealth is its mineral resources, especially bauxite ore. However, the magnitude of Indonesia's bauxite potential has not been fully utilized where the value of bauxite exports in 2019 was 16.1 million tons compared to the value of bauxite production used for domestic purposes, which was only 2.9 tons. It is unfortunate that the utilization of bauxite in this country is not optimal, because bauxite is a rock that is rich in alumina (Al2O3) mineral with a content of 40-60%. In order for alumina minerals to be utilized, the levels of alumina from bauxite ore need to be increased by processing using a thickener. The sample used in this study was bauxite with an Al2O3 content of 45.59% as much as 15 kg. The independent variables used are the number of rake arm and processing time. Variations in the number of rake arms used were 2,3, and 4 rake arms, while variations in processing time used were 900, 1050, 1200, 1350, and 1500 seconds. The results of the experiment produced products in the form of concentrates and tailings which were then carried out with a grain counting analysis process to determine the Al2O3 content of bauxite in accordance with SNI 15-2228-1991 to meet the needs of alumina-type grinding wheel abrasives. Based on the research conducted, there were 3 experiments that succeeded in increasing the Al2O3 content so that it could meet the criteria for making alumina type cutting grinding wheels. The best Al2O3 content value was obtained by using a variation of 4 rake arms and a processing time of 1200 seconds which resulted in an Al2O3 content of 65,48 % and a recovery value of 67,22 %.
