Abstract

Background: Benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate carcinoma are two types of proliferative lesions that are often found in the prostate gland. The incidence of BPH and prostate carcinoma are increasing with age. On histopathological examination of BPH varied comorbid lesions can be found. Histopathological examination to determine subtypes and Gleason score used as predictor of prostate carcinoma outcome. This study aimed to describe the histopathological features of BPH and prostate carcinoma patients in Anatomical Pathology Department of RSMH Palembang. Method: This study was a observational descriptive analytic study using cross sectional approach. From 1156 patient’s archives who examined their prostate gland tissue in Anatomical Pathology Department of RSMH Palembang during July 2010 to June 2013, there were 912 BPH samples and 183 prostate carcinoma samples that met inclusion criteria. Data were analyzed by Chi Square test (p <0,05). Result: On histopathological examination of BPH was found there were comorbid lesions such as inflammatory lesions (41.3%), PIN (2.2%), AAH (0.3%), other comorbidities (0.9%), and more than one lesion (1, 3%). On histopathological examination was found subtype of epilhelial prostate carcinoma that were acinar adenocarcinoma (93.44%), ductal adenocarcinoma (0.56%), urothelial carcinoma (5.5%), and squamous cell carcinoma (0.5%). Gleason score that was found in adenocarcinomas were 4 (1.8%), 5 (31.6%), 6 (3.5%), 7 (8.8%), 8 (2.3%), 9 (23.4%), and 10 (38.7%). There was a relationship between age and proliferative lesions (p= 0,030 and OR=l, 425 [95% Cl = 1.034 and 1.964]). Conclusion: Inflammation was the most common comorbid lesions on histopathological features of BPH. Acinar adenocarcinoma subtype and Gleason score 5 were the most firequently encountered on histopathological features of prostate carcinoma. There was a significant relationship between age and proliferative lesions.
