Abstract

Introduction: One of the most prescribed drug in geriatric patients is a benzodiazepine, especially short-acting like alprazolam. Unfortunately, alprazolam often use outiside of the indication because this drug has short acting ejfect. Geriatric patients are more sensitive to this drug that can lead to the dependence which can aggravate patient morbidity. However, there is still lack of data on the use of these drugs in geriatric patients. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of the use of alprazolam Methods: A drug utilization study has been done for 2 months through analysis of geriatric patient’s medical records in the internal medicine ward at Rumah Sakit Umum Muhammad Hoesin Palembang from 1 June 2012-31 May 2013. There are 1634 geriatric, then there are 25 patients which found through a computerized system who received alprazolam, but only 23 patients whose medical records found. Results: The prevalence use of alprazolam in geriatric patients w as 1.408%. By sex, the prevalence of female patients is 1.798% and 1.09% for men. Proportion by age showed that group of 60-74 years 91.3%, 75-90 years 8.7%, and> 90 years 0%. Based on the work, the proportion are housewives 52.1%, 39.1% did not work, the self-employed and farmers 4.3% respectively. The most frequent indication are atheroscerotic heart disease, diarrhoea and gastroenteritis of presumed infectious origin , unspecified gastritis, and thyrotoxic heart disease (THD) and all indications are not appropriate according t o the Beers criteria 2012. Conclusion: The prevalence use of alprazolam in internal medicine wards of RSMH is 1,408% and concluding that more women receive prescriptions than men, a housewifes are the most proffesion, and the whole administration of alprazolam is not appropriate.
