Abstract

Introduction: Pediculosis capitis is a disease of the scalp or human hair caused by an infestation of Pediculus humanus var. capitis. Pediculosis capitis spreads very quickly in crowded environments, such as Islamic boarding schools and orphanages. This study aims to determine the relationship between sociodemographic characteristics and level of knowledge on the incidence of pediculosis capitis at the Nurul Qomar Islamic Boarding School Palembang. Method: This study is an observational analytic study with a cross-sectional design. The sample of this study was obtained by total sampling. The number of samples was 146 students who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data regarding sociodemographic characteristics and level of knowledge were obtained from filling out questionnaires. Data processing using SPSS with univariate and bivariate analysis. Results: The prevalence of pediculosis capitis 20.5%. In the results of the Chi-Square test and the Fisher's Exact alternative test, there was a significant relationship between gender (p<0.001) with the incidence of pediculosis capitis. There was no correlation between age (p=1,000 and PR=1,031), education level (p=0,266 and PR=0,651), father's education level (p=0,261 and PR=1,542), mother's education level (p=0,434 and PR= 1,381), father's occupation (p=0,273 and PR=2,014), mother's occupation (p=1,000 and PR=1,028), and level of knowledge (p=0,074 and PR=0,526) with the incidence of pediculosis capitis. Conclusion: Gender has a significant relationship with the incidence of pediculosis. Meanwhile, age, education level, education level of father and mother, occupation of father and mother, and level of knowledge have no relationship to the incidence of pediculosis capitis.
