Abstract
Introduction: Formula feeding in Indonesia is still high. Formula milk often causes constipation. This study aims to determine the relationship between formula feeding with the incidence of constipation in infants aged 1-6 months. Methods: Analytical research was conducted in November-December 2011 at the public health center Sekip Palembang with consecutive sampling method, using a cross-sectional study, data processing with the chi-square and drawn from primary data using questionnaires. Limitation of infant formula used in the study was 75% per day. Result: There were 138 samples that consist of 31.2% sample with exclusive breastfed and 68.8% non-exclusive breastfed. Infants who use formula milk according to its operational constraints amounted to 14 infants. Defecation pattern of 14 infants was 64.3% of hard stool consistency (type 1,2), 7.1% of defecation frequency was less than 3 times per week, and 42.9% had defecation distress. Criteria for constipation present in 28.6% of 14 infants and 20.2% of 124 infants with formula milk less than 75% per day. No relationship was found between formula feeding with the incidence of constipation in infants aged 1-6 months (p = 0.492). Conclution: There was no association between formula feeding with the incidence of constipation in infants aged 1-6 months in Public Health Center Sekip Palembang.
