Abstract

Background: Thalassemia is a hemolytic disease that is inherited as autosomal recessive form disturbance synthesis globin chain up to occur decline cell blood redness and chronic anemia and must blood transfusion and, iron chelation therapy is needed. Assistance during therapy causes psychosocial disorders of parents and influences the occurrence of depression. The aim of this study was to dertemine the relations between depression and sociodemographic status in parent of thalassemia major child patient in RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. Method: This study was observasional analityc with cross sectional. The number of samples was 75 respondent and approach used primary data in the form of interviews and filling out the Beck Depression Inventory questionnaire and secondary data in the form of medical records. Results: Based on the sociodemographic status in parent of thalassemia major child patient, the most are female (82,7%), last primary school education (33,3%), Palembang (49,7%), married (97,3%), not working (58,7%), history of income below the UMR (69,3%), length of child diagnosed more or equal to two years (78,7%), and not part of the community (94,7%). The highest level of depression status in parent of thalassemia major child patient is not depression (72%), and mild depression (28%). Conclution: Based on the results of analysis showed significant relation between depression and economic status. Keyword: Thalassemia Major, Depression, Sociodemographic Status, Parents.
