Abstract

Background: Breast cancer is one of the world’s biggest health problems especially among women, and is a compilation of various malignancies that occur in mammary glands, the majority of which are carcinomas. Clinicohistopathological factors can help evaluate the prognosis and determine the most effective management strategy for breast carcinoma patients due to the heterogeneity of the breast carcinoma. The use of immunohistochemical markers (IHC) is more used in clinical practice in molecular subtyping than genetic testing because of cost and accessibility considerations. Cell proliferation is a prognostic factor and management determinant. In this case the expression of Ki-67 is used as the basis for the classification of molecular subtypes and clinicohistopathology. This study aims to determine the expression of Ki-67 and the characteristics of breast carcinoma in Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital Palembang. Methods: This study was an analytic observational study with a cross-sectional approach to determine the relationship between Ki-67 expression and the clinicohistopathological characteristics of breast carcinoma at Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital Palembang. Results: Of the four clinicohistopathological characteristics associated with the Ki-67 proliferation index, two were significant, specifically histopathological degree (p= 0.018) and molecular subtype (p= 0.000). Conclusion: Expression of Ki-67 is significantly related to histopathological grade and molecular subtype of breast carcinoma patients at Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital Palembang. The majority of breast carcinoma patients in Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital Palembang between 2019–2021 have a high category of Ki-67 proliferation index, are aged ≥50 years and comparable to samples aged <50 years, with the most histopathological types of IBC-NST, having grade 3 (poorly-differentiated), and with molecular luminal B as the most subtype.
