Abstract

Prediabetes is a condition when the blood glucose range is above normal but does not include the classification of Diabetes Mellitus. Prediabetes prevalence in Indonesia in the age range of 15-24 years 10.7% had impaired fasting glucose (IFG) and 16.8% impaired glucose tolerance (IGT). Prediabetes is influenced by both non-modifiable and modifiable risk factors. The purpose of this study was to screen and analyze the risk of how modifiable prediabetes contributes to blood glucose levels in medical students at Universitas Sriwijaya. This type of research is analytic observational with a cross-sectional research design. This study will take samples of fasting blood glucose levels and modifiable risk factors for prediabetes. The sample in this research was students of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Sriwijaya, Class of 2022 using primary data. The minimum sample size is 87 people and the total sampling is taken. Analysis using SPSS with interpretation of bivariate and multivariate analysis using path analysis. The number of samples in this study was 179 with the results of 57 people (31.8%) getting fasting blood glucose levels in the range of 100-125 mg/dL. The results of the chi-square analysis found a significant relationship with BMI (p<0.001), RLPP (p=0.02), and visceral fat (p=0.002) with p-value <0.05 while physical activity, sedentary lifestyle and healthy diet index found no significant relationship. In the path analysis, the results showed that the visceral fat pathway (coefficient =0.328 and sig.=0.328) can explain blood glucose levels. In this study there was a significant relationship between BMI, RLPP, and visceral fat on blood glucose levels in students aged 17-19 years. The path analysis concluded that statistically visceral fat is a risk factor that has a direct contribution to blood glucose levels. Keywords : Prediabetes, college students, risk factors, path analysis, fasting blood glucose, visceral fat.
