Abstract

Introduction: Hirschsprung’s Disease (HSCR) is a congenital disease in which developmental disorders occur in the building components of the enteric nervous system. Hirschsprung-Associated Enterocolitis (HAEC) is a complication of HSCR. It is a condition where there is obstruction in the intestine due to the absence of ganglion cells and hypertrophy of peripheral nerve fibers. HAEC can occur before or after surgery. This study aims to determine the prevalence of HAEC among children in Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang General Hospital in 2019-2021. Methods: This research is a descriptive observational study with total sampling. The data taken are secondary data from the medical records of pediatric patients who experienced HAEC at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang from 2019 to 2021. Then the data were analyzed through univariate. Results: In this study, 19 out of 176 HSCR patients experienced HAEC at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. There were 6 patients (31.6%) each in the neonatal, infant and toddler age groups followed by 1 patient (5.3%) in the school-age group. There were 13 boys (68.4%) who experienced HAEC and 6 girls (31.6%). All patients (100%) had a history of definitive surgery. There were 15 patients (78.9%) who experienced preoperative HAEC and 4 patients (21.1%) who experienced postoperative HAEC. No patient (0%) had recurrent HAEC. Conclusion: The prevalence of HAEC in RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang in 2019-2021 were 19 patients (10.7% of 176 patients who had HSCR). These patients are dominated by neonates, infants, and toddlers. There are more male patients than female patients. All patients had a history of definitive surgery. The incidence of preoperative HAEC was higher than postoperative HAEC and none of the patients experienced recurrent HAEC. Keywords: Hirschsprung, Hirschsprung-Associated Enterocolitis (HAEC)
