Abstract

Issues regarding the curriculum, materials, and learning of medical education in Indonesia still need to be reviewed. Improvement and development of medical education learning materials is a bridge to create professional doctor graduates to improve the level of public health. This can be done by developing learning methods. One of the active learning methods that is light, effective, and efficient is role-play. The role-play learning method is one of the active learning methods played by students into a drama that facilitates the understanding process. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the role-play method on student learning outcomes in learning special sensory systems in the Medical Education Study Program, Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University. This type of research is quasi-experimental with a sample of students of the Medical Education Study Program, Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University class of 2022 who meet the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Sampling was done by simple random sampling. In this study, the mean difference between pretest and posttest in the control group was 34.5455 while in the experimental group was 47.1212. In the analysis using the Independent Sample T Test test, the p value = 0.002 (p-value <0.05) was obtained, which means that there is a significant difference in the mean difference between the control and experimental groups, which has a higher mean difference than the control group. Furthermore, after conducting an ANCOVA statistical test to determine the effect of covariates (pretest) on the posttest value of the control and experimental groups, it was found that the posttest value in the experimental group had increased without the influence of the pretest results. Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that the role-play learning method is more effective in improving student learning outcomes than conventional learning methods.
