Abstract
Background: Anesthesia is the loss of the ability to feel pain caused by the administration of drugs or other medical interventions. Several studies that have been conducted have found that anesthesia is well-known to many people. In addition, anesthesia is considered a specialty with the highest levels of stress. This study aims to determine the level of knowledge and interest of students of the Medical Profession Study Program, Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University towards anesthesia and anesthesiologists. Methods: This study is a descriptive study with a cross-sectional design. The sample is a student of the medical profession study program at the Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University who meets the inclusion criteria by using a consecutive sampling technique. The instrument in this study was the Knowledge and Interest Questionnaire of Anesthesia and Anesthesiologists which had been examined for validity and reliability. Results: The results showed that there were 48 students with good knowledge (30.8%), adequate knowledge 97 students (62.2%), and low knowledge 11 students (7.1%). In addition, there were 61 students (39.1%) who had an interest in anesthesia and 95 students who did not have an interest in anesthesia (60.9%). Conclusion: Students of the medical profession study program at the Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University have adequate knowledge and most have no interest in the field of anesthesia.
