Abstract

Background: Pediatric patients at the emergency room (ER) present with a variety of conditions, including different ages of children with health problems and levels of urgency at unscheduled times. PEWS is part of an early assessment system and monitoring of changes in pediatric patients, recognizing signs of worsening conditions so as to obtain a total score for necessary intervention. The resulting PEWS score is then used to predict the outcome of ER referrals for pediatric patients, such as discharge from hospital, inpatient care, or intensive care. Objective: To describe the PEWS score of pediatric patients and the referral pattern at the ER in Dr. Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital, Palembang, from September 2022 to November 2022. Method: The study’s subjects were children aged 0 to 18 years with PEWS assessments performed upon arrival at the ER, who then received referrals after treatments. The obtained results were presented as simple frequency distribution. Results: Out of 268 patients, most patients presenting without referral to the ER had total PEWS score of 0 – 2, most patients referred from hospitals had total PEWS score of 0 – 4, while standalone referral patients mostly had PEWS score of 0 – 2. Most patients who were discharged had scored ≤2, most patients who were transferred to inpatient care had scored 3 – 4, and most patients who were transferred to an intensive care room had scored ≥ 6. Conclusion: PEWS can be used to anticipate clinical deterioration and show a referral pattern of pediatric patients treated in the ER. Keywords: PEWS, Referral pattern, Emergency Room
