Abstract

Background: Irrational use of medicines has been a problem worldwide, there are more than 50% prescribed not irrationaly, including in clinic of PT Pertamina (Persero) Marketing & Trading Region U Sumbagsel. Irrational use of medicines may cause adverse interaction, resistent of medicines, prolonged disease or even death. The purpose of this research was to identify the rationality of oral antidiabetic medicines use in patient with type 2 diabetes mellitus at the clinic of PT Pertamina. Methods: Descriptive study was used in this study. Data were obtained during October to December 2011 at Clinic of PT Pertamina (Persero) Marketing & Trading Region II Sumbagsel. The population and samples were obtained from medical record of patient with diabetes mellitus who used oral antidiabetic medicines ffom January to December 2011. The variables were the pattem of medicines use, dose, frequency, time of administration, contraindications, interactions to another medicines , the follow up, generic or brand name of medicines, and the efficacy. Results: Most patients received glimepiride 2 mg in combination with metformin 500 mg once a day. The medicines which were the most often combined with oral antidiabetic medicines were NSAIDs. Precise dose and frequency were found in 66,7% and 71,3%. Adverse effect existed in 74,1%. There was no contraindication. The efficacy existed only in 12,2% samples. The follow up, replacement and add drugs which have the rational dose, ffequency was 40,8% samples. Generic oral antidiabetic medicines were only existed in 45,7% samples. Conclusion: Irrational use of oral antidiabetic medicines were found in efficacy of oral antidiabetic medicine, adverse effect, use of brand medicines and the follow up. Therefore, lt is hoped that the results of this study will serve as a basis for the rationality of oral antidiabetic medicines can be increased.
