Abstract

Background. As people age, humans will experience changes in cognitive abilities. Decreased cognitive function can cause the elderly to have difficulty making decisions, decreased executive function, speed, and decreased verbal ability, which can increase the risk of falling. This study aims to determine the correlation of cognitive function and postural instability in the elderly at the Neurology Polyclinic RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang Method. This study is a analytic observational study with a cross-sectional design. The sample in this study were the elderly who were treated at the Neurology Polyclinic RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang in the period October- November 2022. Result. In this study, 27 patients met the inclusion criteria. In this study, there was a significant relationship between cognitive function and postural instability in the elderly at the Neurology Polyclinic, Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang (p=0.00). From the Pearson correlation test, it was found that there was a strong correlation of cognitive function with postural instability in the elderly at the Neurology Polyclinic, RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang (r -.668) with a negative correlation direction, meaning that the lower the cognitive function of the elderly patient, the higher the postural instability in the elderly patient and otherwise. Conclusion. There is a significant relationship of cognitive function with postural instability and a strong correlation of cognitive function with postural instability in the elderly at the Neurology Polyclinic Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang with a negative correlation direction, meaning that the lower the cognitive function of the elderly patient, the higher postural instability in the elderly patient and otherwise.
