Abstract
Introduction: Dysmenorrhea is the most common gynecological disorder complained of by young women in the form of lower abdominal pain during menstruation with mild to severe degrees. The incidence of dysmenorrhea in Indonesia is quite high, reaching 64.25%. Some studies suggest that complaints dysmenorrhea affect the quality of life of women during the reproductive times. There are several risk factors for dysmenorrhea, one of which is the body mass index. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between body mass index and the dysmenorrhea intensity in female students at the Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University, class of 2019-2021. Methods: The research design was observational analytic with a cross-sectional study using the total sampling method. Data was collected using a validated questionnaire which obtained information on menstrual history, Body Mass Index (BMI) and Numeric Rating Scale (NRS). There were a total of 421 samples that have met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were then analyzed with Chi-Square test and Multinomial Logistic Regression Test. Result: The characteristics of female students based on age, the most are in the age group of ≥20 years (62.9%). Based on menarche age, the most group was in normal menarche age (70.9%). Based on BMI scores, the most group was in the normoweight (47.5%). Based on the menstrual cycle, the most group was in the regular menstrual cycle (72.2%). Based on the length of menstruation, the most groups are in the menstrual period range of 3-7 days (85%). Student characteristics based on the dysmenorrhea intensity were most in the mild pain group (46.1%). Based on this study, body mass index has a significant association with dysmenorrhea intensity (p = 0.005). Conclusion: Body mass index is significantly associated to the dysmenorrhea intensity in female students at the Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University, class of 2019-2021.
