Abstract

Thalassemia is a chronic blood disorder that is inherited in an autosomal recessive manner in the form of a decrease in the ability to synthesize the number of globin chains resulting in anemia in sufferers requiring repeated blood transfusions. The amount of blood and the frequency of blood transfusions received repeatedly and in large quantities affect the increase in blood ferritin levels. This can lead the failure of organs such as liver and spleen. This study is an observational analytic study with a cross-sectional design using primary data in the form of interviews and secondary data in the form of data from medical records. The method of taking samples is by using nonprobability sampling technique, then all data were processed with SPSS 26 software. There were 81 respondents with a frequency of blood transfusions > 12 times a year as many as 46 people (56.8%), the number of blood bags received > 20 bags in a year were 41 people (50.6%), and ferritin levels > 2500 μg /l as many as 50 people (65.4%). The results of the analysis showed a significant relationship between the frequency of blood transfusions and blood ferritin levels (p=0.011;PR=1.611;CI=1.109-2.341) and the number of blood bags received on blood ferritin levels (p=0.000;PR=1.897;CI=1.317-2,733). There is a relationship between blood transfusion and increased blood ferritin levels
