Abstract

Pterygium is common in tropical climates. Therefore, the incidence of pterygium is relatively high in Indonesia. However, data collection related to the clinical characteristics of pterygium in Palembang, Indonesia, is the least. This study was conducted to determine the clinical features of pterygium patients at the RS Khusus Mata Masyarakat of south Sumatera Province over three years. This study used descriptive observational with a cross-sectional design conducted from September to December 2022. The samples involved pterygium patients registered in the medical records using a purposive sampling technique. Data from the collected medical records were analyzed descriptively. This study obtained 152 pterygium patients who met the inclusion criteria. Pterygium patients were predominantly female (59.9%), mainly in the age range of 61-70 years (33.6%), and most commonly worked indoors (65.1%). The location of pterygium was primarily nasal (87.2%), nilateral lateralization (61.2%), grade II (32.5%), astigmatism (29%), and clinical manifestation of foreign body sensation 45.1%). Most patients' visual acuity (VA) was 6/9 (15.8%). Pterygium was mainly found in females, 61-70 years old, having an indoor job, nasal location, unilateral lateralization, grade II, having less astigmatism, the clinical manifestation of foreign body, and 6/9 VA.
