Abstract

Background. Tumors of the upper gastrointestinal tract are tumors arising from the esophagus, the gastric region, and the first and second parts of the duodenum. Tumors can be malignant (cancerous) or benign (non-cancerous). This study aims to determine the prevalence and clinicopathological characteristics of patients with epithelial neoplastic lesions of the upper gastrointestinal tract in the Anatomic Pathology Department of Dr. Moh. Hoesin Hospital Palembang for the period January 2019 - June 2022. Method. The research conducted was descriptive research in the form of prevalence. This study used secondary data in the form of patient medical records at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang Hospital for the period January 2019- June 2022 which met the inclusion criteria and exclusion criteria. Result. A total of 46 samples were obtained and met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The results showed that the prevalence of epithelial neoplastic lesions of the upper gastrointestinal tract in the KSM Anatomical Pathology Section and the Medical Records Installation of Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang Hospital in the period January 2019 - June 2022 was 0.12%. Patients with epithelial neoplastic lesions of the upper gastrointestinal tract were more common in the age group ≥50 years (69.6%) and dominated by men (60.9%). The most common tumor location was found in the gastric (52.2%). The majority of epithelial neoplastic lesions of the upper gastrointestinal tract were primary tumors (97.8%). Most epithelial neoplastic lesions of the esophagus, gastric, and duodenum were malignant tumors with the histopathological type of adenocarcinoma. The most common histopathologic subtype in the gastric was adenocarcinoma NOS. Conclusion. The prevalence of epithelial neoplastic lesions of the upper gastrointestinal tract was 0,12%. The clinical characteristics of epithelial neoplastic lesions of the upper gastrointestinal tract were mostly ≥50 years old, male, and the location of the tumor was in the stomach. Meanwhile, histopathological characteristics were dominated by primary tumors and adenocarcinoma type histopathology in epithelial neoplastic lesions of the esophagus, gastric, and duodenum. Keywords. Epithelial neoplastic lesions, upper gastrointestinal tract, prevalence, clinicopathology
