Abstract

Background: Low birth weight babies (LBW) are defined as babies with birth weights below 2,500 grams. The incidence of LBW in South Sumatra has increased dramatically in recent years. This increase needs to be evaluated because LBW is an indicator of maternal health, nutrition, delivery services, and poverty. LBW conditions became the largest contributor to the cause of neonatal death by 37% in South Sumatra. This study aims to determine the characteristics of mothers and babies in low birth weight babies at dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang in 2021. Method: This research was a descriptive study with a cross-sectional design. The study used secondary data in the form of medical records of LBW patients at dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang in 2021. The data will be processed and presented descriptively. Results: From the 62 research samples, the highest birth weight was in LBW (1500-2499 gr) as much as 44%. The dominant characteristics of LBW mothers were in mothers aged 20-35 years (74.2%), gestational age 33-36 weeks (41.9%), parity of 1-3 children (56.5%), history of hypertension (43.8%), and had no history of COVID-19 during pregnancy (88.7%). The most common disease that accompanies LBW was hyaline membrane disease (30.8%). Conclusion: The highest birth weight babies were found in LBW (1500-2499 grams). Most LBW mothers were aged 20-35 years. The gestational age for LBW mothers was mostly at 33-36 weeks' gestation. The highest number of parity of mothers was in parity of 1-3 children. Dominant LBW mothers had a history of hypertension during pregnancy. The majority of LBW mothers had no history of COVID-19 during pregnancy. The most common disease that accompanies LBW was hyaline membrane disease. Keywords: Low Birth Weight Babies, LBW, Characteristics.
