Abstract

Background: Osteosarcoma (OS) is a tumor of the bone that originates from primitive mesenchymal cells that produce bone and osteoid matrix. Generally, osteosarcoma is an aggressive tumor and tends to metastasize early. Osteosarcoma most often occurs during the growth phase of the long bones, and is usually located on the epiphyseal growth plate of the femur or tibia. This study aims to determine the relationship between clinical characteristics and the histopathological type of osteosarcoma patients in the Anatomical Pathology Installation of RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. Methods: This study used a cross sectional analytic design. The population of this study were all medical records of osteosarcoma patients who were treated at RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. Data were analyzed by using the SPSS program. Results: There were 29 cases (50.9%) female and 28 cases (49.1%) male. Most of the age at 11-20 years a number of 34 cases (59.6%). Most predilection were in the femur 35 cases (61.4%). Histopathological types were 7 cases of chondroblastic type (12.3%), 6 cases of fibroblastic type (10.5%), 4 cases of other types, and 1 case of osteoblastic type (1.8 %). Symptoms or complaints that are often experienced are lumps in 36 cases (63.2%). Conclusion: The relationship between age, gender, and tumor location with histopathological type has no significant relationship. The histopathological type of osteosarcoma based on symptoms is dominated by the fibroblastic type with complaints of lumps.
